DEPOKPOS – In the story by Guy DeMaupassant “The Necklace”, the main character desire to appear wealthy leads to her downfall. Madame Loisel tries hard to fit in societies not to be friend or to be blend with everyone, but only to look wealthy in that party. The story shows us how little lie can lead you to your downfall and teaches us better love what we have. Even todays, people still do the same thing just to be accepted by society.
Madam Loisel actually neither poor nor rich. Still, she unhappy with her life and dream of being a part of upper class. And when she gets a chance come to fancy party, she is trying her best to fit in with the upper class, she is borrows a very beautiful and fancy-looking necklace from her friend. When she come to the party, she is success to look beautiful and fit with the other, but everything changes when Loisel find out she lost the necklace.
Instead of telling the truth Loisel and her husband buy a new necklace to replace it, which leads into ten years of hard working and suffering. In the end of the story she finds out the necklace was fake. All suffering that she and her husband been trough can be avoided if she just being herself and tell the truth.
This story teaches us: pretending to be someone else can make your life worse, not better. Loisel want everyone know she is rich, but it only brought her pain. She didn’t appreciate what she had in her life, such as caring husband and comfortable life. Many people don’t realize how lucky they are until it’s too late.
Comparing to real life, back in 2022 there was an influencer whose name is Indra Kenz, he is faking buy Rolls-Royce and Toyota Supra. He is doing that just to fit in the society. Like Loisel it leads him to something he never imagines. The story maybe old but the message is still true today. It better to honest and live your life than fake image and suffer the consequence.
The next time you feel pressure to prove yourself with things or lies, better stop. Choose honesty instead. Real happiness comes from within, not from others think of us.
